A project to strengthen sustainable tourism in the archipelago
About the project
Sörmland has a fantastic archipelago with great natural and cultural values. A steadily growing number of visitors in the archipelago poses a risk of excessive wear on nature. It is therefore important that development occurs in a sustainable manner and can be coordinated with increasing maintenance and care of natural and cultural values. A fundamental prerequisite for a sustainable tourism industry in the archipelago is that there is an expanded infrastructure – primarily regarding toilets, waste bins but also docks, collective archipelago traffic, service points, and accommodation options.
Sörmland's Archipelago Interest Association has recognized the need for a plan for the physical infrastructure in the archipelago. In the project ”Preconditions for preserving and developing the archipelago in Sörmland” they conducted a mapping of the physical infrastructure in the Archipelago in Oxelösund, Nyköping, and Trosa municipalities. They developed a plan for maintenance and distribution of responsibilities for important infrastructure. The project also led to the initiation of a consultation for the archipelago, which Region Sörmland is now driving.
In the project, collaboration has taken place with Nyköping municipality, Trosa municipality, Oxelösund municipality, Region Sörmland, the County Administrative Board of Södermanland, and the association Green Coast.

Why was the project prioritized?
LAG's decision on prioritization with justification:
The project creates conditions for preserving and developing the Sörmland archipelago. Many islands are subjected to heavy wear. A fundamental
prerequisite for a long-term sustainable development of the tourism industry in the archipelago is that there is an expanded infrastructure. Primarily toilets and waste bins but also docks, boat traffic, accommodation options, service points.
Sörmland's Archipelago Interest Association is a credible and
well-established actor that has engaged all municipalities in an important effort to preserve and develop the archipelago in the future. The project will benefit primarily nature and all who visit the archipelago but also for residents and for businesses that work in and with the archipelago as a destination.
