Pre-study: Hydroponic coffee cultivation
Preparatory study on the possibility of growing coffee in Sörmland
About the feasibility study
Sörmland coffee in your cup?
During 2025 and 2026, Rashma Randeniye, through the company ReEnvision AB, will conduct a feasibility study to investigate the possibilities of growing coffee in hydroponic cultivation in Sörmland. The feasibility study includes testing and documenting hydroponic coffee cultivation in a pilot plant, performing market and profitability analysis, developing a budget and different scenarios for commercial implementation, involving experts and advisors, and analyzing sustainability and circularity.
The testing activities will be conducted at Christineholm in Nyköping municipality.
NOTE: The project is prioritized by the Leader Sörmland Coast board and is awaiting a decision from the Swedish Board of Agriculture.

PRELIMINARY STUDY
”If it turns out that there is profitability and the technology allows this, the next step is to start a larger cultivation and create
sustainable coffee farming in Sweden.”
Why was the project prioritized?
Hydroponic coffee cultivation is an innovative and novel method that has not yet been tested commercially in Sweden. By investigating the possibilities for local coffee production, the project reduces dependence on imported food, while exploring energy efficiency, circularity and resource optimization. This feasibility study may also open up new areas of application for hydroponic systems in other crops and strengthen local food production.
The project is well-established locally with actors such as Christineholm, Almi Sörmland and Katec and is based on collaboration between several sectors.
