Rural Forum 2024: Preparedness, Food Supply and Sustainable Innovation

On November 19, over 60 participants gathered at Öster Malma for Rural Forum 2024, an initiative by Nyköping Municipality to focus on preparedness, food supply, innovation, and sustainability. The day featured a packed program with prominent speakers, engaging discussions, and concrete tools for future challenges in rural areas.

Society's preparedness in focus
The forum began with insights from Per Edling, commander within the Armed Forces, who highlighted the importance of cooperation between military and civilian actors to strengthen society's crisis preparedness. This complements local initiatives from Nyköping Municipality regarding safety points and the role of civil society in crisis situations. Read more about the project Prepared Nyköping

Innovation and food supply
Richard Tellström, food historian and associate professor, fascinated the audience with his reflections on Swedish food culture and its ability to adapt to new conditions. Oscar Uhrström from Växa Odling inspired with the story of how sustainable farming in former sandstone quarries creates new opportunities for food production.

Sustainability and the future of rural areas
After lunch, Andreas Kviby from the Reuse Factory shared how reuse can become a driver for sustainable development. Discussions about the contributions of green industries and the role of businesses in climate issues concluded the day with a focus on the future.

Panel discussion and networking
The forum concluded with a lively panel discussion featuring representatives from the county administrative board, municipality, and business sector. Participants had the opportunity to network and exchange ideas on how rural areas can stand strong in the face of upcoming challenges.
