Historic blacksmith converted into open-air museum and meeting place at Husbygård
Husbygård and Husby-Oppunda parish association has a shared vision to transform the old forge at Husbygård into a living open-air museum and a welcoming resting place. The aim is to enrich the visitor experience for cultural and creative entrepreneurs and nature lovers.
Background:
Property owners are faced with the challenge of finding new uses for overflow buildings that can complement existing operations and make the site more attractive. The main building of Husbygård is currently used for short-term accommodation and the natural beauty of the surroundings is a significant competitive advantage in increasing occupancy by residential guests.
The forge is not just a building; it represents a valuable cultural heritage and an important part of the Sörmland landscape. Its restoration in 2023 with support from the County Administrative Board has created a platform to transform it into an open-air museum and a meeting place for various activities. For enthusiasts, there is the opportunity to forge the old-fashioned way.

Why was the project prioritized?
LAG's decision on prioritization with justification:
A rest area at the old forge is beneficial to both the tourism industry and residents of Husby Oppunda and the surrounding area.
The project makes a culturally historic building accessible in a way that makes the area more attractive to visitors. The forge has the potential to become a ”hub” for nature tourism where visitors can start/end their hike/bike ride or canoe trip. In addition, it can offer a new leisure activity for those active in blacksmithing. LAG appreciates that the project collaborates with the parish association to create a summer program or a vision for the forge and how it can be used in the future. The rest area can also help promote the applicant’s visitor activities.
The project is granted 70 percent support as it is a project support for companies. Since the project's benefits also accrue to the public and contribute to the development of the area, the application is assessed to be granted a higher support rate.

Purpose and goals
Purpose: to strengthen the area's attractiveness as a visitor destination with a common gathering place and to develop Husbygård with new visitor activities.
CASE:
– That the forge should have water and electricity,
– To equip the outdoor area at the forge with a patio with seating and a fireplace,
– To set up an information board about the forge/area,
– To install lighting inside the forge as well as at the seating area and information board.
