Feasibility study on local conversion of horse manure to biogas fertilizer
About the project
Horse manure currently poses a logistical and environmental challenge for many stables and farms. Transportation is costly and climate-impacting, and the demand for sustainable soil improvement materials is increasing among growers. At the same time, interest in local and small-scale bioeconomy is growing.
The project conducts a feasibility study on the possibility of establishing a small-scale ”Bio-station” for local conversion of horse manure to biogas fertilizer at Lina farm, Södertälje. Two techniques will be tested: vermicomposting (worm composting) and thermocomposting. The association will document efficiency, measurement data, environmental benefits, costs, and collaboration models. The study will provide a basis for a future larger investment and analyze opportunities for business development related to technology, services, and raw material processing.

Decision justification
The project addresses a relevant and current local need, as the management of horse manure is a recurring challenge for many stable facilities in urban-adjacent environments within the leadership area. The feasibility study touches on issues of circular solutions, reduced transportation, and local resource efficiency, which aligns well with the strategy for smart and sustainable rural areas.
By prioritizing the project through the umbrella project, there is an opportunity to test needs, conditions, and collaboration models in a controlled and knowledge-generating manner before any potential larger investments are considered.
